So here’s how it works: The government subsidizes corn, soy & wheat. Then the government encourages us to eat more & more wheat, more vegetable oils (while discouraging animal fats), & puts corn in our gas tanks. The wheat, sweeteners & vegetable oils ruin people’s health so they go see a doctor. The doctor encourages them to eat more wheat to control their problems they are having with wheat (diabetes, heart disease, etc.). The doctor prescribes medication from the pharmaceutical company & the insurance company pays for it all. If we have side effects or complications from the drugs prescribed then there are other prescriptions to take care of those side effects.
So, here we have the agricultural industrial complex with the big seed companies (Monsanto, Bayer, etc) supplying the farmers with genetically modified seed & the government supplying the farmers with our tax dollars & their recommendations that we eat 8 to 10 serving per day of their grain. Think of all the things that go into the growing of mono-crops: equipment to plow, seed, water & harvest the crops, the seeds, water, fertilizer & pesticides to grow the crops, the trucks to distribute, the factories to convert the product into breads, syrups, crackers, oils, ethanol, etc., trucks to distribute the final product, & the markets to sell the product. I’m certain I missed quite a bit there, too.
Mono-crop farming employs a LOT of people: people to make the equipment, run the factories, work the supermarket, drive the truck, etc. If these people are employed then they are paying taxes & probably have insurance. If mono-crop farming was ended tomorrow, the nation would lose an incredible amount of jobs. But wait, that’s not all! Because these products ruin people’s health, they are now going to be supporting all of the people involved in the medical/pharmaceutical/insurance industrial complex.
You eat 8 to 10 servings of whole grains per day, just as your government advises. You gain weight, your blood pressure skyrockets, some develop type II diabetes, you feel depressed. You don’t feel well, so you go to your doctor (receptionist, nurses, office expenses, etc.) and he writes you a prescription (laboratories, scientists, research, pill factories, sales people, etc.) and your insurance (sales people, offices, etc.) pays for it. Sometimes you get so bad that you have to go to the hospital (countless people & equipment necessary). Your health problems are employing a LOT of people!
All of this isn’t even scratching the surface of the people who are employed to maintain this colossal self-feeding cycle! We also have countless people writing stories and maintaining websites to further the propaganda, there are lobbyists in DC begging for subsidies, & many more things that I have no clue about. I would say that probably half of all people in America work to further the farming/medical/pharmaceutical/insurance industrial complex. Crazy, huh?
[Oh, I forgot that if everyone is fat & sick & on medications, their life expectancy will decline & they will take less handouts from the government in the form of Social Security & Medicare. Keep them alive for as long as they work to sustain the employment of half the nation.]
